The global cash-flow picture

According to Intuit QuickBooks' 2026 Small Business Late Payments Report, based on its Small Business Insights survey of roughly 5,000 quarterly respondents, 59% of small businesses now carry overdue invoices — up from 47% in 2025. 22% have at least 20% of their invoices unpaid past 30 days, and the average unpaid balance per business is $17,700. The same research finds that 49% of owners say standard payment-processing times create critical or moderate cash-flow gaps, and 39% report that a single late payment in the past year made it hard to cover payroll or bills.

We deliberately do not use the widely repeated claim that "82% of small businesses fail because of cash flow": it appears on a large number of marketing-oriented sites but does not trace back to a verifiable primary source. Rather than use a figure we could not confirm, we relied on the QuickBooks data above.

The picture in Turkey

According to weekly data from Turkey's Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), total non-performing loans rose from 351 billion TL in March 2025 to 679 billion TL in March 2026, a 93% increase. Over the same period, non-performing SME loans rose from 106 billion TL to 240 billion TL, roughly a 126% increase, and SME loans made up 35% of total non-performing loan volume as of March 2026. These figures are economy-wide; they do not break out a construction-specific figure — we state that limitation plainly.

The construction-specific view

For sector-specific data, see our article Financing Cost and Collection Pressure in Construction: according to konkordatotakip.com data, construction rose to the top of the insolvency-filing ranking in the first eight months of 2026 — even as its own filing count declined, because other sectors fell more sharply. That is just one sector-level reflection of the broader rise in non-performing loans across the economy.

The control set

  • Read the weekly cash-flow forecast on the same screen as the receivables-aging report.
  • Track the share of invoices overdue at 30/60/90 days by customer, not as a single aggregate figure.
  • Compare open commitments and scheduled payments against expected collection dates under the same period filter.
  • Close bank-to-subledger reconciliation at least weekly, not only at period end.
  • Flag high late-payment-risk customers and subcontractors with an early-warning label.
